intake silencer?

I plan on removing the intake silencer very shortly, but I have one question. Do I have to put the velocity stack in when I take the silencer out? I have been reading that the only purpose of the velocity stack is to draw cold air from the fender to the intake. This kinda puzzles me because there isn't really a need for cold air going to the turbo. The air is just going to become extremely hot after passing through the turbo anyways. Some one fill me in please.

no you don't have to put it back on, lots of people leave it on so that it still looks stock
