How is it that flex pipes dont leak?

How is it that flex pipes dont leak?

I've always wondered this... how do they make those flex portions in exhaust pips so that they don't leak through the bendy mesh? How are they made?

the mesh covers a section of jointed piping it doesn't actually come in direct contact with exhaust gases.
