okay i am very new to wrxs and hope to own one soon! my buddy says that they come stock running 8-9 psi. I was wondering what all needs to be done to the car until you can run 18-19 psi, remember that wrxs and turbos are all new to me as i drive a bmw and am used to NA. So do you have to upgrade intercooler turbo etc?
David
Ps also when you buy an upgraded FRONT MOUNT intercooler can they go under your stock wrx bumper of do you have to buy a new front bumper that has room for it to fit?

Your friend is way off. Stock PSI is about 13.8; don't get a front mount intercooler unless you're running an upgraded/larger turbo (otherwise the front mount will cause hideous lag and make the car undrivable under normal conditions; plus, the stock bumper beam either needs to be cut or replaced with a Japanese beam). Also, be careful with electronic boost controllers. A little too much ambition can lead to a blown turbo and possibly engine. Plus, if you're considering a BOV like 9/10 new WRX owners, DON'T. It's a waste of money and robs performance and gas mileage from your car unless you have an upgraded turbo and/or are making high horsepower. If you do eventually go for one, stick with a recirculating BOV. And as a last note, I know you didn't bring this up, but DO NOT get a cold air intake in the WRX. And stick to the stock intake; it's good for up to about 300hp (get a short ram only when you exceed this number via a new turbo or you swap to a front mount intercooler). Good luck and welcome aboard.

i suggest you stop listening to your friend and start reading as much as you can on these forums.
choku dori is right on the ball with that stuff, he has a wealth of knowledge.
i think that for 19 you would need engine management, turboback, new turbo, injectors.... other stuff i don't remember.
that's a stage 4 right?
then again you could always get a manual or electronic boost controller and set it to 19, just take a chance in blowing up your car.

hmm.
with some supporting mods, a bit 93 octane w/10% methanol, and careful tuning, i manage to run 20 psi on the stocker with no knock whatsoever.
you've just got to do a lot of homework, and make changes carefully and one at a time. for a mod list, check my www page.

thanks so much for all the info i am a little bit away from getting a wrx so that is why i am starting to do all my research now, and beleive me i have to start from point A!!! But anyways, i was looking into turbo upgrades (not right after i get the car of course, but eventaully i know i will do an upgrade im so much more about speed and handling then how ilook (even though i hav esome ideas for that part of the coche too!) but anways back to what i was saying, i was looking at the I believe its something like vf34 blah blah i know it had a 34 in it, and they say its the turbo from like the 01-03 japanese wrxs or something? does anyone know anything about this turbo is it good or not? and how much more hp will it give the car? also is says it is direct bolt on? is that true and how long does it take the bolt this onto the car? with this could i run an upgraded tmic? or would i have to go Front mount? and yeah thats all for now i will have plenty more ?'s haha thanks once again for all your help

Seriously, you need to do searches for these questions. They've all been beat to death. i-club is a great source for info. But you're wasting alot of time asking these questions in this manner.

Why upgrade and tune the engine so soon?
Id rather go for the Whiteline kit so the handling improves and learn to drive the car. When thats done and you feel like having control over the car in (almost) all conditions, then start tuning the engine. No need for lots of hp when you cant handle it......
Just my 2 c......
