HKS Hiper silencer question

the sound of my catback was a lot "cleaner" before I added the helix up/down combo. at full throttle now, its super loud and kinda "raspy" would the HKS silencer aid in making the sound cleaner. I'm pretty sure its the overall DIA of the damn tip that makes it so funky sounding but I guess thats the price I pay for a "bling" looking exhaust. Also, does the silencer hurt HP at all? If anyone has had any experience with the silencer please let me know. Ive heard a few Subies with smaller tipped exhausts and it always seems to sound nicer than mine, maybe I'm crazy...

thanks.

well for subys im not to sure but i know for other cars if you add in a silencer it will hinder hp a little because your restricting the amount of eg's coming out. There was an article about that in import tuner with dynos and everything.

usdm hks hiper's don't come with a silencer. The jdm ones don't fit. If you get a jdm silencer, you'll have to cut it in half.

babysmurf (her username) has done this. You should PM her if you want more info.
Also, the silencer does hurt horsepower a bit. It interrupts smooth exhaust flow and hurts performance.

thanks for the responses...If it hurts HP, I'll put up with the loudness.

Supra-man:

If I knew how to get a sound clip and put it on the internet, I would, but Dont I dont have a digital camera. The exhaust sounds very mean, but just screamin loud at full throttle. The whole idea about the silencer was so I could get on it at full throttle and not attract every cop within a couple blocks. You wont be dissapointed with the combo.

Acutally, the trick is to either upshift early and keep the revs low, or cruise by the po-po in neutral

HKS USA sez:

3306-RA074 ALL SUS304 - Black 120 $40.00

that "120" is "120mm" .. just like the USDM Hiper and Ti.

I found another solution. I bought a auger muffler from www.speedwaymotors.com for $15 and inserted it into the exhaust pipe.
It is designed for drag racing where noise levels are enforced and supposedly doesn't drop much power.

It works like a charm. The exhaust is very quiet and I have felt no noticeable loss in power.
