Helix makes very nice up and down pipes, and Gruppe-S has a nice deal for the combo. At that point, there are quite a few nice catback exhaust out there. I am personally going to buy the Turbo XS turboback in about 2 weeks and get the Helix flex joint uppipe not long after.

I know their different companies, but I think their downpipes are exact replicas, so I would buy the helix for value.

i'd say, save money on rims and just wrap the stock rims in better tires. california? don't see much snow heh? get a set of S-03s ~$600 , then save up for a set of STi v7 or 8 take off suspension. ~$800 used to ~$1100 new.

also, i wouldn't get a flex uppipe. the uppipe gets VERY hot, which could in turn heat the block and near be components unneccessarly. I would ALWAYS coat an uppipe with jet-hot and you shouldn't coat flex sections.

Two words... heat shields. This is why the OEM piece is a flex design, and has heat shields. All in all, I would prefer a non-coated flex uppipe over a coated non-flex unit. A Flex uppipe with a proper design, like the S-squared unit mentioned by RussB, acts like a heat shield while reducing thermal expansion stress on the header, uppipe, turbo, and downpipe. It is less prone to cracking or leaking and radiates less heat than a non-flex uppipe would.
