What kind of exhaust do you want? Cat-back, Turbo-Back, Axle-Back? You can get a lot of really nice cat-back for under $700. Do a search on here and check the reviews out. Depending on what you want it can only be one piece so it all depends on you.
Search and you will find more than you bargained for and delay your exhaust purchase just from research and maybe after you reach a decision you will have extra money saved up.
$700 will get you a really nice cat-back system with some decent gains.

check out Gruppe-S they have a full helix exhaust power pack for about 850 and that includes up pipe, down pipe, and cat back. plus cell fix. for the price its a good system. good luck

Blitz Nur Spec R is the best sounding exhaust i have ever heard. highly recommended. 3.5 inch diameter piping , stainless, with available silencer. Giving your STI or WRX the release it been waiting for .

vishnu turbo back is excellent. Fit and finish is superb. Throttle response is crisp and powerful throughout the power band. A bit expensive compared to what else is out there, but still retains a catalyst so the cops won't hound you. Also passes the sniffer/smog test. O2 sensor still bolts up with slight modification of wiring. If you spend the extra money now, you won't ever be dissatisfied.

The Vishnu is under the 92 db level since it was recorded at Laguna Seca raceway. It has some resonation in the car but there are different levels of sound. Some exhausts are loud only on the outside, and some retain the sound under or inside the car. After attending some track events, I couldn't even hear my car, even thinking I haven't even started it yet. It is just my opinion and not to badger anyone elses. Stage 2 cobbs...I've seen some guys out there with that kit and they seem to be only running in the high 13's. It seems to be a great idea, and can probably be tuned better if a dyno was accessible. Like I mentioned on another thread, there is a guy at Infineon with a stage 2 Vishnu and he is running consistent 13.0's. Clicked a 12.9 at 105 when I watched him. Mind you, his car is a wagon and an AUTOMATIC! By far, the one of the fastest wrex out there. Good luck with your choices!
There are some people that are running low 14s and some running mid to low 13s with Cobb stage 2. The driver and supporting mods have a lot to do with 1/4 times. Someone with only a HKS downpipe and stage 2 isnt going to run as well as a car with Cobb's TBE and stage 2. But then again you could put a good driver in the car with the HKS downpipe and his times would be better than a guy that cant drive in the one with the Cobb TBE. Im not saying that Cobb is better than Vishnu, they are both great tuners but Vishnu stage 2 (estimated 1/4 mile=12.4-12.7) costs $4245 and Cobbs stage 2 costs $1535 and I doubt the people running high 13s have the Cobb TBE. Vishnu's stage 0 would be a better comparison ($1095-estimated 1/4 mile=13.2-13.6) to Cobb,s stage 2 ($1535-estimated 1/4 mile=13.4) so it seems that Vishnu would be the better bang for the buck. Since Vishnu stage 0 has no post turbo modifications I would think there would be an increase in back pressure (not sure) and since I am concerned with reliability and I wanted the Accessport, I went with Cobb. Like you said, I doubt anyone would argue that either is better than a good dyno tune or even better to go with a street tune.
Sorry I got off topic.

I totally agree. Driver and tuning are huge factors. Cobb has a great reputation as well. I just wanted to suggest that if you are going to go with one tuner, stick with them. When people try to mismatch parts, that when the trouble begins. I've seen too many people try to save a buck because someone else sold this "piece" cheaper but it's supposed to do the same thing. Well, it never does. Best of luck to you and happy racing!
