Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

EJ205 built (IN PROGRESS)

Story of my Cars aggressive driving racing it to redline every gear when ever an sport compact or Domestic wannted to run. I do drive hard cause i know i can fix it. From bumper to bumper transmisson too currently running Sti verion 6 ra gears which i installed my self.

Its all started in May of 2008, I was in an hunt for Subaru engine for my 2002 Subaru Impreza Wrx. I went thru couple engines my self orignal engine(RIP 42,000) meaning it really rested in peaces when an Number 2 rod broke and went around the block causing massive engine damaged complete loss only heads made it. So i needed an short block decided to get the STi EJ257 hybrid and slap on an cometic headgasket to fix the compression ratio with EJ205 Heads (19,000 Later) after fixing it. The SBR GT3013 turbo put alot of pressure on the cp pistons which i upgraded my self and an number 3 cylinder wall broke off. I am an Mechanic thank god how much money i saved :P i realized Ej257 is an weak block compared to ej205. Yes STi may be semiclosed but the block is bored over making the cylinder walls thiner where the piston sits. The instresting thing about the block is the cylinder wall broke where there wasnt the support as we all know as semiclosed block. So i went back to ebay and bought an Ej205 long block from an 2003 wrx on ebay installed it but could not start it so i was like man i got an bad block. cantacted the guy says it should run so i did my like investigating found that there there stock moded injectors slaped on some old stock injectors from preverious engine and the baby ran. Now being lied to by the guy which said it was stock wasnt so now (30,000) later on this engine i got all cylinders miss missfiring 1,2,3,4 blue smoke as u drive crazy blowby i will show movie as i still run this engine just keep it in 1k-3k rpm. I knew that this engine would not run long having injectors mod big turbo etc engine life was not gonna be long. So May 2008 i went to ohio after winning an longblock complete intake manifold heads all except turbo from ebay seller for only ($395) HAHAHA yes i know very cheap. I had to pick it up so i drove got my boys and made an road trip From CHICAGO to OHIO 5 hours and 30 mins one way. Got there and seen my engine i could not belive it only $395 it was from an 04 wrx way better engine shimless cups , 52mm rod journals and better crankshaft etc. Asked the guy why so cheap he said it had valve guide problems so i said okay. Now being and technican i know i had to tear it down and see what happened. Naturally stared an cylinder leak test and found all 4 cylinders with 100% leakage. So i teared it down another mans garbage can be another mans treasure. I found that all valves where carbon up and where not sealing right and had oil in the tgvs to much oil and i am not talking turbo oil. I wanted to know this problem happened. SO i pulled the the pistons and found out that they where installed wrong upside down and the 1st and 2nd compression rings where not 180 degrees apart but only 5 degrees apart . tearing up the block in half to see no bearing damage inside. I know none by looking at the engine i would rate this engine with ony 5k to 8k miles looked brand new. I was an luck man i had an perfect block cylinder walls still had factory cross hatch marks so i am doing my magic.

Sorry for such an story but me and my car go long way with trial and error you learn so i decided to go to my orignal roots with The EJ205 built.
I will be posting pictures from the tear down this week so u guys could see what i see. Ebay may be an auction but sometime you really could find gold.

My Plan:

04 EJ205 with is Better then 02-03
ACL Race Main Bearings
ACL Race Rod Bearings
JE MOLY RACING RINGS
JE Pistons (stock bore) 92mm
Eagle "H" beam Connecting Rods
04 EJ205 Cranshaft

My internal parts should come by Dec 16.

I plan on weighting in the stock engine parts along with the
aftermarket ones to see difference in weight.

If you guys have any guestions just PM me.

my vote would go for towards the ej257 = easy torque
ive yet to see an ej25 semi-closed crack (that i know of) except for one that was doing 10's on a drag strip at 6000 ft elevation. (who now switched to a closed deck)
jw, when dropping in the cp pistons on the old ej257 you had, did you give a bit of headroom for the forged cp pistons to expand? i have a teeny bit of piston slap at idle, but think safe is better than sorry when running the car extremely hard/hot for long durations ie road racing with forged pistons

from what ive read and heard the ej207 setups are also very fun and smooth to drive, but havent had any personal experience with those. still wanting to drive one..

good luck on your build!

I had an crack block that allow coolant to the combustion camber and i thought it would hold how many people really mod there cars and drive them daily 100miles city with 400whp stress is hard on engine. I need an real engine and the ej205 never diappointed me in my driving and only got an cracked rod which had no noise just let go at 3rpm shifting. I am gonna beef it up and walk over the sti ej257. I was thinking about doing an ej207 crankshaft from version 9 and supply more oil port the heads new cams and rev it up to 8000rpm . How many people you hear about ej205 problems about rod bearings almost all never cranked wall.

cp pistons wasnt the problem it was the foundation yes cp pistons are forged which expand it heat i had new block with cp pistons. When taking apart a block u have Size a Pistons and Size B pistons only like an examle ej205.
Size A (92mm) Size B (92.5mm) . Belive me there wasnt an mechanic error meassurement where made with t gauges and micromeeter ring gap so on. It lasted 19,000 it was fun but stranded was not.

i thought the ej257 was suppose to be good for a 400whp daily driver. i just bought a ej257 from a friend who has 400whp. where you driving it pretty hard, misfires or detonations?
