early warning for us all!
I know this is premature, but I had a lengthy discussion with my subaru dealerships head mechanic. He is a good friend and has kept me aware of any mods that will void my warranty. He even installed my cat-back exhaust for me. Subaru will be putting a new computer scan system in place in 2006, which will be able to detect, any ecu modifcations. The way it was described to me is, it is basically like a smog sniffer for your ecu. It will be able to tell if you have reflashed at any time, used piggyback comps. reset your ecu(it's ok if the dealer records the reset), Your ecu is a computer, and just like deleted files can be retrieved from a harddrive with the right software, so to will Subaru be able to detect and retrieve the slightest changes if you have made them. It will no longer take in depth reading of voltages on sensors, or other means or a master tech to find the evidence. The software is designed to be used by any level mechanic at the dealersip. Oh well, screw it I'm ordering my cobb reflash, scooby sport uppipe, downpipe and taking my chances. I am also buying a new computer for my reflash, So I'll have one stock, and one reflashed, for easy swapping out. How many more hoops can SOA make us jump through?
I'm sorry but i have to call a little bit of BS on this.
Detecting new maps and such, yea i can see that.
able to tell if you have reflashed??? i find it hard to believe they would be able to tell if you reflahs to an aftermarket map, then reflashed back to the stock maps.
there's NO way they can tell from software if you used a piggy back, that's just plain silly.
reset your ecu(it's ok if the dealer records the reset),
what's the problem with that. from now till 2006 they don't expect a single WRX battery to die, or someone to install a new sound system, alarm , electrical item.
I'm not saying your friend is lying, but i think he was misinformed. Flash rom computers DON't work like magnetic disk drives. plain and simple
BUT i'll have a legacy STi by then, hopefully

Subaru warrantees are BS anyway. They'll find any way to void it if they can. I am going through hell with mine right now because of a blown trans that they are trying to put on me even thought it was their fault (looong story). I even heard of a guy they denied warranty work on his car because he put in an aftermarket stereo. Bunch of idiots. Just dont mod your car till after the warranty expires, thats all.

Recognizing reflash
I talked to my local dealer about this. He told me if an ECU is reflashed using ECUTEK software, a copyright ID is required and is recognizable.{With Subaru's Prodrive/ECUTEK software]. Cobb did their own R+D, and doesn't leave a "signature" on an ECU. It costs less too! Collins

Exactly, and people wonder why the ECUTek costs more. Because everytime an ECU is reflashed, that ECU needs to be registered such that the computer is aware that it was using Authentic Subaru/Prodrive/ECUTek software for the reflash.
