The EJ22 swap is the route to go if you ask me.
Are you thinking of swapping the turbo?
ya, i got 100k miles of rally abuse lol...

i am almost positive it is a spun bearing because of the noise.
also, it still boosts fine so i know it is still creating exhaust pressure out of the motor which leads me to beleive that the pistons, rings, and ring lands are fine. also did a compression test at 110k miles and everything was 145psi.

i have wanted to do the ej22 for a long time.

some differences are the 4 bolts from tranny to engine unlike the ej20/ej25(8 bolts)

you have to tap the tranny housing to have a lower mount for the starter. there is no hole with threads in the block to mount the starter on the lower mount. so you just tap the transmission hole and make threads, put a stud into it and use a nut on the back of the starter.

closed deck design, larger cylinder walls(less expansion when the cylinder walls get hot). those are just a couple of the great qualities of the ej22.

i found mine in CO

and i dont think anyone wants my STi motor it has 45k w/ the heads and uhh the serial numbers are gone

long story short,the guy didnt want the motor traced back to him because if it blew up he didnt want to be responceable (smart people i know)

hmm i didnt know that about the starter thanks for the info

i only know about the head gasket thing when you put on EJ22 heads

or the fact that if you just drop in the block the motor wont run because of such low compression ratio(7.24:1 abouts) you have to either change out the pistons right away or shave the block and heads down a little bit and use a really thin head gasket(not a personal choice since idk if i could trust a thin gasket to make the proper seal).

To put the wrx heads onto the ej22 you will need to either swap the pistons on the EJ22(the dish on the oem piston is too deep creating the low compression ratio) or shave the head and block down a little and use a very thin head gasket. plus a tune of course!

OK i was thinking just get pistons there is a so cal guy that works at JE and he can hook it up so ill just do that then
just have the compression right off of that instead of screwing around with comtec head gaskets

what crank would you use the EJ22 or EJ20 or EJ25

and rods and bearings then its off to teh machine shop

i would get myself an ej25 sti crank, ej25 sti rods(makes displacement a lil larger than 2.2L and use aftermarket pistons.
