Big 16G or VF-34??
Whats up everyone. It's tax return time, so I am in the market for a new turbo. I have a 2003 WRX with a Vishnu Stage 1 kit. It consists of a Helix non catted UP/DP, and a 3" TBE, as well as an Ecutek tune. It pulls good, but no topend power. I have done many searches on the VF-34 as well as the Big 16G / 18G, and they both are equally good turbos for street and ocassional track use. I'm not looking to get 500 WHP nor an 11 second 1/4 mile car, but I do want a nice smooth power delivery that will hold all the way to redline. My question is, which one would be a better all around turbo? Thanks for the help.

The 16g is not as proven as the vf34. I believe the 16g is more powerful and spools faster, but is more expensive. Also, from all the reading Ive done, the mitsu turbos need higher octane to get good results. So to answer your question, of those 2 turbos I would choose the vf34. If I lived in another state with 93+ at the pump It would be 16g, 18g or bigger.
I have a similiar setup as you and want more power also. To throw a curveball in the mix, here is what I would do (if I had the $ ) --
Buy a new/used vf30 or vf22. Both are cheaper, the vf30 is good for the same power with slightly less spool (than the 34) and the vf22 has a bit more lag but more hp capacity. Plus, with the money saved on the turbo, you can throw on a bigger topmount intercooler. Good luck with your decision

it doesn't but you still need higher than the **** 91 octane for the 18Gs to reach their full potential at higher boosts. the 91 octane severly limits the potential of the super16g and 18-20g turbos
