Do you have a BOV?

Backfire=combustion in the intake tract
Afterfire=combustion out of tailpipe, which is what you're probably experiencing. This happens from unburned fuel in the extremely hot exhaust stream mixing with oxygen out the back of the exhaust system, resulting in combustion. It is not directly harmful to your engine, but does signify that you are running rich. The reason I ask if you have a BOV is because those make the engine run extremely rich when they release into the atmosphere. They are also pointless on 99% of Subaru applications.

backfire also happens with Catless downpipes/exhausts...

if you have no cats, don't be surprised when it backfires, especially at full throttle to no throttle transitions.

also a black rear bumper...

The only thing I can add to what has been posted above...is your ECU properly tuned for your mods? Combo of aftermarket BOV, intake, exhaust, etc and no tune will cause plenty of unwanted/random snap, crackle and pop. If you are tuned and still getting frequent back/after fires than there might be a more serious issue at hand...my $0.02

I ♥ backfire

If it get all the way out of the exhaust like the pic above it is truly beautiful

As I know, as long as it is happening after everything is supposed to ignite, it's not a big issue. If it is happening a lot, you could be running rich and just wasting fuel. If it happening in the intake, you could be having some valve failure. But I doubt that is what is going on.

And once more for good measure.

Man, I love fireballs.

^ nice pic...but that's probably at WOT blasting around the track.

One thing that OP also needs to clarify is whether it is happening under WOT driving or just leisurely normal speed cruising around town.

We call that a "backfire" but technically it is an afterfire.

Running rich is not ideal for the motor.

Not my car. But I know the ingredients are rich tune and catless exhaust. Not overly rich but yeah. I wouldn't run a fireball tune all the time. But if I had a AP I would have a rich tune loaded on there that I could switch to.
