Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

AEM short ram intake causing stalling?

I have a friend, no not me another friend, he has an up-pipe, and TBE installed on his 04 WRX, he installed an AEM short ram intake ( because he has a UTEC and FMI, ect. ready to install, I know the stock box is good) he said it caused the car to idle rough then stall, he checked the installation, took it back out reinstalled it and it still would stall? Why would it stall?

I know the aftermarket short ram CAI's can possibly make
you run lean but, I never heard of anyone having stalling issues
though.I don't see why it should stall that is odd?
Does your friends car have a manual transmission?

Yes it's a manual, I could not forgive him if he had an auto. I also found it odd that it would stall, I could understand it running lean, I thought maybe he inverted the sensor, would that make a diference?

Your friend needs to get his Utec installed and his car tuned. Running a turbo-back and intake without engine management and a tune is potentially dangerous for his engine, plus it will run crappy...as he is finding out

A reflash, Ecutek, Utek, Cobb accessport..etc...and a tune will solve all of his problems.

He didn't drive the car with the intake just fired it up, reinstalled the stock box. I knew the intake could cause the car to run crappy, just never heard of one stalling at idle. I'm running stage 2 map for UTEC with catless up-pipe, TBE, and TXS short ram, haven't been tuned yet but haven't had any problems either.

Really you are the first person I have encountered that hasn't had a
issue with a aftermarket short ram CAI.
In my opnion I don't see the point of having a aftermarket CAI unless
you are making gobs of power.

Correct. A CAI is as usefull as a BOV or underglow neon lights.
