3" Exhaust with Stock Turbo?
Hey guys I have a Blitz Nurspec Catback, and an Invidia downpipe, both being 3", I also have a helix flex uppipe. I am running these mods with a stock WRX turbo... Is this affecting my performance? It seems like it takes a really long time to create exhaust pressure. When I put my ehxuast silencer in it almost seems like the car is a little faster, is this because the silencer creates back pressure?
Without an ECU reflash or other tuning (for example Accessport, although there is no map to exactly fit your mods) you won't see the full benefit of the exhaust mods. However, your turbo is not the culprit; you have changed the speed that exhaust *exits* the turbo, not how pressure builds up in front of the turbo. Backpressure does not affect a turbo engine the same way it does an N/A engine -- the faster the gases exit the turbo, the better.
Yes, headers would make this even worse, without a true dyno tune as part of that mod. I personally don't see a need for headers until you are running an upgraded turbo, fuel system, intercooler etc. -- headers are that mod you do to sqeeze an extra 4-5hp out at the end, not a mod to do early in the process.
