Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

fun stuff..

the STOCK ecu tuning on 04 (some 05) WRXs contains a delay in the transition from closed loop to open loop fueling.

resulting in A/F of 14.7-15 @ WOT under full boost between 4-6krpm.

SOA has NO fix for this, there is a re-flash that has done NOTHING for my
car.

the solution, engine management...

has any body here had this issue?? if so did the EM fix it??

I've been told by mechanics that it will, I've read in nasioc that it will..

and it seems obvious that it will work.

I'm just looking for personal experiences.

How do you know that?

In any event, a proper tune will fix that condition if it in fact occurs.

the issue has been duiscussed as length on nasioc (not my favorite group of folks)

the threads contain numerous data logs and posters with the same problem.

MY car is running lean and pinging at WOT between 4-5800, seen on my father in-law's obd2 scanner. and SOA has a re-flash that's SUPPOSED to fix this common issue..It doesn't work..

that's the info I'm going off of.. BTW, thank you for replying so quickly.

I'm reluctant to post this Q on nasioc due to all of the flame throwers.

I'm just curious who has had the issue here.

Yes, the issue is very real. I have an 04 and for awhile I ran it with a DP and no EM. Not a good idea. I have a Cobb reflash now, and that has solved my problems. Before EM, the engine would hiccup or lurch violently when releasing the clutch. It would happen everytime I let out the clutch in a certain RPM range under WOT. This has been documented by many others with 04/05 WRX's.

Get EM. I posted some links in another thread.

Engine management/ecu reflash like the accessport, it will fix it, smooth out the power band and add more power. Either that or drive slow to prevent pinging.

Ping!!!

I put an 03 ECU in my 04 WRX and it got rid of the problem. Plus gave me 15-20 more HP. And yes there is supposed to be a fix for that now. But I have already modded mine and had an EcuTek reflash done. Good luck.

AP is so easy. YOU would be stg 2. the map switching is great. and with protune you could carry a up to 10 custom dyno tuned maps with you. (though that would be expensive)

Any EM is crucial for an '04, even stock. mine was detonating like hell.

Utec is great. but you have to know alot more about tuning to use one properly.

the ap gives you "off the shelf" maps and the ability to tune yourself or let the pros do it.
