You couldn't go far wrong by looking at what tuners like Cobb Tuning, TurboXS, and Vishnu Performance offer in the form of their Stage kits. They aren't considered all-out race packages but will work well in daily use on pump gas (along with optional race gas maps), producing a lot more usable power than the stock WRX setup.

The VF30/VF34 turbo is a common upgrade. It bolts onto the factory exhaust flanges and has acceptable boost characteristics for good throttle response and significant top-end gains. There are bigger turbos out there that can be adapted to work but you may lose some day-to-day driveability.

30/34 would be the middle of the road I would say for your turbo upgrade. If you want a little more top end, I would suggest the VF-22 ( thats what I run )

if you want a little more streetability, I would also sugest going with a good top mount instead of the front mount. I think you will see a little better performance down low with a good top mount vs the front mount

as for the PE1820, you can run with supras on the freeways with one of thoes and the proper supporting mods

I've been thinking of getting a turbo upgrade for my car and so far this is what I've considered:

1. Front Mount Intercooler:
a. XS Engineering FMIC
b. Turbo XS FMIC
c. Perrin FMIC
d. AVO FMIC

2. Short Ram Intake Pod
a. HKS Racing Suction Kit
b. Zero Sports Intake System
c. XS-engineering Short Ram
d. Turbo XS Short Ram

3. Veilside Ground Wires
4. Denso Iridium Plugs(One Step Colder)
5. Optima Battery
6. Perrin Fuel Rails
7. Walbro Fuel Pump
8. PE Injectors
9. Adjustable Fuel Press Regulator

10. Turbo Upgrade(I'm Stumped On This Part Here!!!)
Which one is the best upgrade out there. So far I've looked at the XS 450hp kit, PE1820, HKS GT Series turbo, etc.

I wanna be able to at least keep up with stock Twin Turbo Cars in high way race or spank them.

Marky
1) go with TMIC unless you want over 500hp or so
2) id go with injen CAI
3) DIY for less $
4) sure
5) sure
6) sure
7) sure
8) good but STi injectors are also a popular choice and most tuners have more experience tuning with them....not that it matters much but if you're going to buy a used reflashed ecu or something your mods would have to be the exact same as someone else's and sti injectors would be the more popular choice
9) sure
10) also look at avo ball bearing ...this guy ive talked to..cant remember his user name is getting one from his friend soon for 1000$ its a 2000$ ballbearing turbo...if you want ill ask him how he likes it...im not sure about the specs/name of hte turbo

My personal favorite street setup for all round driving is a VF34 with a large top mount (TurboXS/Hyperflow).

For fueling you can use STI injectors, Perrin fuel rails and a Walbro fuel pump (no need for an adjustable FPR for this setup)

I would keep the stock intake system and remove the silencer then add something like a Perrin or ITG panel filter.

We have seen this setup produce mid to high 12's and be very reliable.

about the intake, if hes going for over 300 hp isnt it a good idea to have an aftermarket intake b/c the stock one becomes a restriction

Not really. If you read Shiv's drag strip results in his Evo, you'll see that he is making over 550 hp at the crank through a factory intake that's every bit as convoluted as the WRX.

Well have you guys tried an aftermarket? I doubt the differnce would be huge, but I'm curious as to what it would be because many people on these boards believe the stock intake is good for no more than 300 horsepower.

There is a big difference between the WRX and EVO intake mate, Shiv would even concede that. The EVO is a inducted design already unlike the WRX.

I didn't see any mention of going above 300hp above and would still see no reason to change instakes from stock unless forced to (Ala FMIC) for a decent performing street car.

FWIW - 95% of the members on here are no where near 300whp and I would doubt have the tools necessary to validate such claims of restriction.

Yes we have tried aftermarket and stock back to back on several tests and found very little difference on the bolt on modded cars.

Well i sorta assumed he was going for at least 300 crank hp. Has anyone tested intakes on cars making well over 300 hp? Mike about how much hp were the cars you tested making?

I have no idea about crank output but we have worked with plenty 270whp+ cars on the stock intake system if that gives you anything to measure against.

And you've tried aftermarket intakes on these cars with proper tuning and found few gains?

Nope not all of them, enough to not use intakes until state of modifications deems it necessary. Obviously this is only in our opinion.

I'd take the money saved by not getting an intake and have someone dyno tune your car. There are so many other things for spend $200 rather than an intake.
