Does anybody know if anyone makes a Midpipe WITH a cat for a 03 WRX? (for those that dont know what I mean) By midpipe, I mean the pipe that connects the DP with the Axle back. I know there isn't much room under there, but I know they also make different sized Cats, and I would like to have one HI Flow cat on my car for emissions purposes, but I dont want to use the stock UP/DP, and was hoping to find one that will fit UNDER the car in the midpipe.
Thanks

I can't quite make out if you want one to be placed where the stock 3rd cat is or not because there are 2 pipes between the DP and the axel back. If you want one in the 3rd cat location, check out random tech, if you want it AFTER the stock 3rd cat location I think you are ****ed and will have to have one welded in.

No, no, I have a Helix DP, and Perrin CB......and there is only 1 midpipe that connects the DP with the axle back....its not like the stocker.....and Yes....I was wondering if there is enough room to put a cat in the Perrin mid pipe, which would be AFTER the stock location for the 3rd cat (since the DP eliminates that) OR if anyone knows of a company that makes one already.

I would suggest going to an exhaust shop and they can weld something in that will fit for around 50 bucks plus parts. That would be cheaper than buying one that is mass produced.

For optimum efficiency, the cats need to be close to the exhaust ports. If they're located too far downstream, the exhaust gases have cooled somewhat and the catalyst doesn't do its job as well. That's why cars will sometimes fail the sniffer unless thoroughly warmed up.

Stromung has a new 3in. setup (D.P. & 3rd cat-pipe). They are really nice! I have them both, but however the Stromung 3rd cat-pipe is pretty expensive! The cat in it is very small (doesn't even look like a cat). It is a "metallic substrate" cat as apposed to a "ceramic substrate" cat that the car comes with. It's the only cat I have on my car & it sure does the trick! Check it out!

I wanna check out the Stromung DP w/cat that SubieStyle mentioned....couldnt find it on their site tho.....
Got a link for that SubieStyle? that would be great, thx.
although I am leaning more towards something like sKOOTer suggested, provided I can find a Cat that is small and will fit under the car in the space the midpipe is currently in. We shall see...
thanks for all your suggestions tho. I appreciate it.

Ted - Hey no one makes a Midpipe with a cat in it at this point.
WW was right in the spot to put a cat is closer up the system so that is why no one really has built one. When you buy a DP like the Helix or HKS that takes away two of the pipes it was really meant for off road racing only where they don't worry about cats.
I would suggest selling your Helix and going with something like the Stromung DP because they offer a Primary DP with no cat and then a Secondary DP w/High flow cat option.
To get more info and pics you can look no further then the Vendor section under my Stromung thread and I have pics near the end. Just look at the last page and go backwards for the most recent info and pricing....actually here is a link for you, I will start you on the page with info on the DPs...

I hope this helps!
You won't be disappointed in the Stromung at all!
Thanks,

"Secondary downpipe" sounds an awful lot like midpipe to me.
Ted, the easiest thing to do is just have a new midpipe fabbed up with a high-flow cat in it. Cost you $200, max. Gino would be happy to do it for you, I'm sure.

BAN SUVS - Man you are all over the place...lol....do you work?? It is no wonder why you have so many posts!
The Secondary DP is really what other would call a catpipe or racepipe and it is the second pipe after the DP if you were counting the 4 from the factory. So it is still the pipe before the Midpipe.
I hope that clears it up...if not feel free to look at the link and it shows pics as well!
Thanks,
Brian

. However, As Kevin said up there /\, that is most likely the route I am taking.....I understand that the closer the Cat is to the engine the better it works (atleast until it gets warmed up properly), but that doesnt mean that it will not be effective a foot or so farther down the line....so I am not worried...as long as my car is warm when its smogged.....its all good....I have to deal with just about every type of smog issue there is when its time to smog my truck...so this is not a big deal to me.
thanks for the great info tho, and the links.

Sorry to be a little late to the party that seems to be serving some miss information at best, Ted - MRT makes a catted midpipe which while pricey is still an option. If you would like a nice 150 or 200 cell cat placed in the downpipe or midpipe we would be more than happy to do so and it will more than outflow the Stromung pieces, we also have test data to show it passing smog (not that we would recommend that) We have used these high flow non cermic (junk) cats on several STX cars now.

GotBoost? - Hey no problem!
You are most welcome! As long as the cat is warmed up proberly then you shouldn't have any problems passing the tests....it does have to suck to have to go through those tests....we have the luxary of not having test in theh South.
If you need any further help then please do not hesitate to ask!
Best of luck!

Something else we would like to point out on this thread, it matters not where you place the CAT as far as passing smog in CA, unless you go to some ghetto or lazy place you will not pass smog regardless as it is illegal to remove the factory cats unless faulty or damaged and for smog you have to replace with factory equipment. That being said there are plenty of folks in the BAIC that have managed to get a car with aftermarket cats through the visual all we wanted to point out is that it is a flip of the coin whether you pass it or not.
The systems we have installed for the STX folks (and our own Rally car) whilst do pass the sniff test and work within the rules for the SCCA are still fully intended for offroad use only.
