I'm thinking of getting a utec in replacement for my unichip. I do not plan on adding any more mods then my current stage 2 setup of the t.b. exhaust and K&N. I am aware of the management bennefits the utec will give, but what can I expect, if anything, as far as a performance gain, going from the standard unichip stage 2 program to the tunable utec stage 2. I'm interested to hear from anyone who kept their "stage" but changed from the uni to the utec. Given that I will likely not upgrade the car further, I'm trying to justify the cost of the change.
Power shouldn't be any different if you do just a straight swap. However since you can now tune for your mods for your car and it's production variances... You can now tune for the most HP/TQ from your setup.
Unichip maps or any default map are usually very conservative and there is always some extra power that can be extracted with a little time spent tuning on a dyno and on the road.

i got a unichip tuned by cobb before they moved out of texas and the unichip is programable to the specific mod and car. you just can't do it yourself. or at least i can't cuz i don't have an awd dyno in my backyard or the computer software that lets you change the map. not to mention the know-how of every little detail of a ej20. most unichip dealers just sell unichips with preset map but it can be changed just go to a APS dealer and they can do it for you.
oh and by the way. with the unichip only, i mean no airfilter or exhaust or anything else. i put 205whp and 215wtq down to cobb's mustang dynometer. if the wrx has about 170 whp in the beginning........ let's do the math

uni-chip
Air/fuel, Boost, Timing, compresion, these are the things that make your car go fast.
All the aftermarket chips do it. It's all about the tuner. Who is manipulating your ECU.

UTEC comes with four preset maps, plus a valet and a security map. With the ~$60 switch you can switch the map from the drivers seat. You can tune the UTEC yourself if you have the computer or PDA or whatever or you can download other maps from TXS. I've also heard that some unichips cause engine stumbling in the low RPMs, the UTEC doesn't. The UTEC controls boost through the stock boost control solenoid, eliminating the need for an additional boost controller. For me, just the fact that the low-RPM stumbling is eliminated makes the UTEC worth the money.

stumbling
It depends on who tunes it.
The uni-chip only does what it's being programed to do.
The chips are only as good as the tuner.
That's like saying "I don't eat eggs cooked on a gas stove because the last batch I ate were bad, and that guy cooked on a gas stove. It's not the gas stove, it's the idiot doing the cooking.
What good does 4 preset maps do you? Are you going to swap out parts everytime you go to the store?
Also the Uni-chip comes with a boost controller so you don't have to buy another one.
Next month uni-chips will be plug and play, with valet mode. It's about time.
