Raazin, The whining noise is the pump working. It is a little louder than the stock pump.

Gino, you can believe what you want. I am going to try replacing the strainer. It is worth a shot. If you didn't read the post above where I state the problem my car is having, it is the same problems these people described. Obviously, this problem doesn't happen with all of the Walbro fuel pumps. I may have bought one of the pumps with a problem. I don't know yet.

If it works, I will post the results and you will be the first to know it. If it doesn't work, you were right, and I will be looking for a replacement pump.

Last Sunday, 12/20, I replaced the Walbro strainer for the OEM strainer and right away noticed a difference in the way the car idled. I let the gas get low today, a little under a 1/4 tank, and tried a worst case scenario to see if I would experience the same problems as before. I took a jaunt up Bear Creek road, and had the gas sloshing back and forth in the tank. Even under boost, I did not get any knock or EGT's to tell me there was a problem. The car ran a lot better than it did with the Walbro strainer. The Walbro pickup that was on my car was a little more than 5mm shorter than the pickup of the OEM strainer(not the teabag). I am also wondering what the size of the Walbro pickup hole/s are in ID compared to that of the OEM pickup. The changing of strainers worked on my car, but remember all cars are different. Sorry to burst your bubble Gino.

Kurlee Daddee, which Walbro pump do you have(341 or 342)?

I bought the one that Gruppe-S sells as the WRX kit. It is a 341. I checked it when the pump was out of the car.

Huh. I wonder if that is the issue?
The 342 is a direct replacement, which is what I bought.
The pump, sock, feed line, everything look almost exactly the same.
The shape of the internal sock support was a bit different, if I recall correctly.
I read about the issues with the sock before I got mine, and so I looked real carefully at everything before installing.
I forget if I used the stock sock or not, have to look in my parts box, but I remember thinking there is no way it could possible matter.
I checked the sizes, height when empty full, how the sock sat, the tubing diameter, etc.
I haven't seen the 341 firsthand, but now I bet it has a different sock.

You are correct. As it says in this link:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...p+install+sock

From what is says in the link above, the 342 is the direct replacement, whereas the 341 is not. Now people need to be wary of both types. If you get the 341, use the stock sock.
