Upgraded my tmic, getting detonation

Over my 4 day weekend I installed my new ebay tmic made by ssautochrome. It has some good gains and I like it a lot so far but I'm more than certain that I'm getting detonation now. Mostly if I'm in 2nd or 3rd going past 4500rpms I can hear it. Sounds like rocks or pepples in my exhaust.

02 EJ20 engine, mods: catless uppipe, 3'' catted tbe, crank pulley, ebay tmic and tb bypass.

I'm already planning on getting tuned later this month / early next month and will be picking up a Cobb AP in the next couple weeks. So I have a few questions..

1. Will my engine be ok as long as I'm not going past 4k rpms and not hitting full boost?

2. I'll end up having the AP before I get tuned, would it be a good idea to switch to the CA 91 stage 2 wrx map before the tune? (hopefully to stop / reduce the detionation)

3. Or should I just run the stock ecu and baby it till I get the Protune?

Have you tried resetting the ECU to let it relearn your setup? I know that aftermarket ICs have less of a pressure drop so it might be due to the increase of boost due to the turbo working just has hard but with the decrease of the pressure drop, you might be overboosting. If resetting doesn't fix it, or you've already tried I'd just try to stay out of boost as much as possible.

I would think the AP CA 91 stg 2 map would make your car run leaner than the stock map since stock cars usually run richer. I'm not sure how the COBB map is setup, but with my limited knowledge I'd stick with stock for the time being and hope that the ECU can learn the stock setup.

I agree with that and would baby the car if you're detonating until the Protune. A few weeks of little to no boost is better than buying a new motor.

From personal experience do not run the Cali base maps from Cobb. They run lean and since you have knock already you would only be doing more harm than good. Honestly I would just install your old tmic until you get a protune done. But that is just me the thought of detonation makes me cringe.

Yes I did reset the ecu. I see what you mean about the base maps being lean, I've heard a lot about that.

Looks like I'll just take it easy till I get tuned.

Deffinately take it easy untill you get it tuned if you're hearing knock. FYI, I have seen almost no gains from a larger TMIC with the stock turbo.

Thanks

I don't think its heat soaked, every time I got out and checked the tmic it was cool to the touch.

Btw, is it possible I did any major damage to the engine driving for 3 days having it detonate? I thought it was my heat shield rattling at first but I ruled that out.

maybe you blew a cat. you have any cats left?

my car makes noise like that and I'm pretty sure I blew up my downpipe cat. sounds like pebbles in my exhaust...but mine makes the noise even at idle when she's cold.

hope everything is cool.

I just have the Perrin high flow cat downpipe. I don't see how in the world my cat would blow out. I'll keep it chill till I'm tuned or just go back to stock tmic if it becomes a problem. Only does it boosting after 4500rpm. Anything lower than that or at idle its completley normal.

I threw the stock tmic back on today, no more detonation at all. I'll put the aftermarket one back on the day before I go in for tuning.
