Silencer remocal questions?
I just removed my silencer bod and now all that is left is the filter box. It is just iopen to the engen bay and the fender. I did not put any tubing to route it back to the fender wall. My queston is do I have to worry about rain water gettign into the filter box?
What should I do if anyhting?

You can get a silencer elbow bypass which will essentially remove the silencer, or you can just have some type of piping coming from the airbox into the wheel well. I did get the silencer delete elbow from genp but I didn't really like the fact that it still seemed to silence the turbo some. I wound up hacking that elbow apart just so it would grab air from the wheel well. So I essentially got a overpriced piece of pipe *shrug*

water is never a good thing on any engine but to be completely honest with you, you would have to literally submerge the intake or tubing in water to have any serious effect. a few drops of water will more likely get soaked into the filter. i personally have drove through 2-3 in. of water with a cold air intake at decent speed with no problems to be honest i was more concerned with hydroplaning. i wouldnt worry to much unless you plan on turning your subie into sub.

You should cut the silencer/air intake box in 2 places. First cut the silencer off. Then cut off half of the "Y"- where the top screw is, but cut in front of the screw so you can screw the pipe back into the airbox. All you need is the half "Y" to mount back into your filter. To further explain again:
1. Cut the silencer off with a horizontal cut, so you have the "Y" looking top part left. This top "Y" part is where the air comes in (from the engine air intake scoop) and then it goes to the filter.
2. You then make another cut to cut off one side of the "Y" where the air comes in from the engine air intake scoop. You cut in front of the screw, because you want to keep the screw so you can mount the other side of the "Y" to the filter box.
3. Then you take off the air intake scoop, because you don't need that anymore. And you tape up all the holes in your engine compartment which leads to the fender.
Now all you have is cold air coming from your fender, and not your engine. And you can hear the blow off valve and turbo. It sounds awesome. While racing, you can actually take off the fog light cover so a lot of air can flow freely. Even though there is enough air with the cover on. By the way, to take off the silencer's bottom screw, it's easier to go in from the fog light cover.
Sorry I don't have any pics.
PS. to make the cuts you can use a regular saw for cutting trees or something.

as for the water, that's not a problem, because there are holes on the bottom of the air filter box for it to drain out. The air intake and filter into your turbo is above or top mounted. In other words, it sucks the air upwards into the turbo.

If you just place the "Y" section on, you will still be sucking hot air in, because the air intake scoop gets hot because it is right above the radiator. Did you ever try touching your hood "kick stand" right after a normal drive? It's pretty hot and so is your air scoop.
But putting on the "Y" is alot better than not having anything on your air box. You are sucking hot engine air in, because the air box is in your engine compartment.

Interesting. I might just put the Y back but it is cut and I might tape off the end that comes into the engine bay and leave the other end that is in the wheel well open. Then it will only pull air from the fender wall.

To be honest the cooler air doesnt make much of a difference once the air hits the turbo. thats why we have intercoolers. also another reason why most people dont favor CAI (cold air intakes) the reason why you would take off the snorkel is to free up restriction and to get the cool turbo/bov sound.

Sweet. Well I am not goign to pay money to get a SUS type cone filter intake. WOuld look cool but that is all it would do. I am goign to leave the box and let it go. Sounds liek that is the best hting to do. SOunds cool and spools up a little faster.
Now time to put money into and exhaust and chip.

I've run 3 Scoobies now w/o the silencer for many miles w/ no problems when it comes to water. As for what to do after you remove the airbox, just do this:
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...=&threadid=167
No need to put any piping in, there is plenty of air in the fender no need to add anything back on it only adds restriction back.

This mod is for Scoobys with MAF's you have and MAP and your silencer is all under the hood and not in the fender. The elbow you are talking about (I think) is the one off of the airbox that holds your air filter and is not supposed to come off.

I just talked with Vishnu and they said they do not recomend changing your stock intake airbox for the 04 STi, IF you want to get a Xede installed. Anyways, that's what they told me. I never bothered to asked why, because I did not plan on changing mines anyway. They said the K&N drop in filter with stock air box and the silencer mod was ok.
Any thoughts?
