A stock autometer style A/F gauge will not work, subarus run 12v O2 sensors. Autometers are ment for 1v. Look at Mach Ones site they sell a remapped gauge specifically for subarus.
And I feel you on the no help thing, I've figured alot out on my own, But I still like to help if I can.

I have an autometer A/F ratio guage on my 02 WRX and it works just fine. I had a shop install it, but to answer your question, try reading this for a better understanding of the guage.

My car has the full sweep for lean to rich, under different driving conditions of course. If it didn't work out with the car, autometer claims that it will stay rich.
