It's probably simply the matter of the STi motor running big fat injectors for making 300+ hp at high rpms. It can't help but run rich at idle.

I am not sure if you have noticed but he is from the UK. They do not have the 2.5L engine and are running an EJ20 with top feed injectors and not side feed like the EJ25.

Normally the engine runs a little on the rich side. Even the stock WRXs will run just a tad rich. If you can get someone to data log what the ECU is doing, then you can figure out what is causing the problem.
