ECU vs. Intake
Talked to Vishnu today concerning new ECU flash. Word is: Can't have ANY after-market intake if you want their ECU flash. I can't believe Stage 1,2,3 etc, with several hundred HP claims, all run with stock intakes! Like and respect Vishnu, but find this hard to understand. Am open to any and all explanations., Baffled, Collins
This is becuase most if not all intakes are not well designed and fool with the stock MAF sensor.
For one air that comes into a cold air intake or short ram intake may not have the correct dia in regards pipe size. The MAF is designed with a certain pipe diameter in mind and many intakes dont follow this.
Another reason is that turbulent air in or near the MAF is bad and also makes for hard to tune situations.
The stock air box will handle some 300+HP with no problem. In fact, it's safer to say even upwards of 350HP. If you get a full standalone system you can convert to MAP and run any darn intake you want.

RE;reflashes
To: Wingless Wonder, Good question,I asked the same thing. I thought it was for "off the shelf" also, and offerered to drive to Pleasanton for dyno and reflash. Answer was "No intakes, cold air or not. Intakes do more harm than good". Still baffled, Collins

To fatcatturbo,
Thanks for your "mind expanding" personal opinion. If you would like read an intelligent bit of info on this subject {intakes, ECU reflash}, try azscoobie's reply to "Vishnues Take On Intakes" thread. Read and learn.
Thanks for the platitude,
Sincerely, Collins

its really not that hard to understand
1 the stock air intake was desigend to exact specs for the maf
2 after market air intakes are not
thus an after market intake can cause unpredictable results
and yes more or less they are sold because they are a cash cows .. just like BOVs, except more dangerous

That's totally correct. We simply refuse to provide remapped ECUs for cars with aftermarket intakes unless in-house custom dyno tuning is performed. And even then, there is absolutely no benefit (as far as performance goes) of running the intake. But there is an extra hour of tuning free incurred since I have to revise the entire fuel table to compensate for the MAF sensor misreadings that the particular intake induces. Just not worth it unless one must have the sound or the underhood look that the intake provides. Just my 2c,
shiv
