I know tha one use for that plug is to connect an OBDII scanner. The simple answer seems to be "buy an OBDII scanner." That way you can pull codes and learn what is exactly causing the CEL. Then you can remove them without reseting your ECU. Otherwise I have no clue.

Thanks. But I was trying to avoid that, as a laptop with some software will work fine. Just need to build a RS232 (COM Port) to WRX. Didn't want to spend $1000 plus.
I could jump in head first into wiring diags, but was hoping someone out there, has built one.

OBDII scanners are about $50 at autozone (or NAPA, or whatever parts store you prefer). They're standardized, which part of the whole point of the switch from OBDI to OBDII. Likewise, software/laptop/palmpilot based scanners tend to run upwards of $100 (last time I checked). You can buy a cable that will connect your laptop to your car, but the two will not know what to think of each other until you get the software. Generally, it's just cheaper and easier to get a handheld scanner.
Plus, you can use it on any other car you might have that is younger than
1996/97.
