D-series doesn't need the control unit. But the link system is real nice because it has peak hold and it can record your runs.

All mounting hardware is sold separately.

Oh yeah, I missed that comment. Defi gauges are either Link system or they are not, you can't "add it later." BF works with the Link, as well as "Defi Link" gauges, which are a little cheaper but they don't have that bad-*** black face when off.
