CEL Codes Reset Themselves?

So my son and I installed the new knock sensor in his '99 RS yesterday. Getting the old one out was a bear. I soaked it in PB Blaster all day, then had to apply some serious muscle while using 2 ratchet extensions to clear the throttle cable.... But we got it done.

He took the car to Autozone afterwards to have them clear the codes (we actually have 2, the P0325 and the P0446. We're attacking them one at a time). The CEL came back on immediately, as I knew it would (due, at least to the 446), but the Autozone person didn't pull the codes again, saying that the 325 would probably be there and it would go away after driving about 50 miles or a series of cycles. Is that true? I didn't realize that some codes would clear themselves, I guess.

the ecu will clear the code after a while (key cycles, time, miles, etc.). thats only if the car doesn't throw another code.

Ok, thanks, so here's a follow-on question - the car had 2 codes, one for the knock sensor (P0325) and one for the evap system (P0446), which I suspect is the corroded wiring in the rear of the car. We replaced the knock sensor, so after driving it a bit and then pulling the codes, should we see the P0325 gone and just the P0446 there?

Thx, Dan

If you fixed the knock sensor code, you should only see the p0446.

Check to see if the wiring is rubbing anywhere. Also check at the connectors to see if it has any corrosion in side.

Hopefully, I'll get the CD manual that I bought last week, today. Would really like to see some pictures of this area before I start taking things apart. But have read a bit on-line about the P0446 code so know the area to check and what to look for...... Thx, Dan D

Good news - my son took the car to Autozone this evening, they pulled the codes and only the P0446 is there - the P0325 is gone! Now we're going to try and fix the P0446 tomorrow afternoon.

Well, took the cannister off Friday afternoon and checked all the wires, they all looked ok, no obvious corrosion or breaks... So taking it to local dealer later this week, have to get the car inspected this week. Anyone who lives in Central NJ know of an independent shop that specializes in Subarus?

A P0446 could be anything, even something as small as the gas cap being no good anymore

if the initial problem that caused the code to throw is fixed, then all codes will eventually reset themselves. the P0325 being a short/open code will reset once the PCM "sees" that the circuit is fixed. the P0446 is another short/open code that will reset when fixed. since the wiring looks good the problem may be in the vent solenoid itself which (I think) bolts in to the charcoal canister.

uhh... i just realized this post is like 2 months old, so did you find the problem already?
