I have a Prodrive ECU. I have had it since October 01. It has withstood the test of time. I have had absolutely zero problems thus far. I run 93/94 octane and have had no audible detenation. The performance gains were very noticable after the ECU swap even with a fully stock exhaust system in place. I highly recommend them as long as you have access to 93+ octane fuel.
Simply put Prodrive wants to ( and will be ) releasing their ECU to the U.S. market ie, PPP ( Prodrive Power Package ~ ECU, turboback, uppipe and CAI ) but they needed to be sure it would be compatible with a minumum of 91 octane fuel first, hence the delay in its release..
I have corresponded with Simon Lines of Prodrive via email regarding my experience with their ECU. He gave me a lot of good info regarding their performance philosophy and the limits of the ECU ( which I can elaborate on if you would like ) and was very interested and encouraged to know about my satisfaction.
Tom..
P.S. I will be selling this ECU soon due to my upcomming major modifications planned. If anyone is interested in one of these you can let me know and I will keep you in mind once it is available. They are not cheap, I paid $900.00 plus I had to swap out my stock ECU for it. I purchased it thru Totalsubaruperformance.com

I will have Vishnu's ecu re-program soon and I understand that he is using the same software as Prodrive. So if you need a STI map with fuel rails shiv can help you out.
My Very Best and Happy thanksgiving.

Heres my story,
prior to purchasing the Prodrive ECU ( fall of 01' ) I had done some research on their Prodrive Power Packages and spoke to a few people in the U.K. where the Prodrive Power Package ( ECU, exhaust, uppipe and CAI ) are offered and they really liked them. All I wanted originally was moderate performance gains that would be relatively reliable and safe, unlike what I was reading about with the Unichip's. So I found a retailer here in the U.S. who offered the ECU and then decided to make my own PPP understanding all along that I would need a minimum of 93 / 94 octane which is easily available in my region ( thank god...). Interestingly when I asked some techinical questions about the ECU from the people I had purchased it from ( totalsubaruperformance.com ) I was put on hold and then an English gent came on the phone and politely answered all my questions. I would bet that he was instrumental in bringing the ECU's over from the U.K., but I didn't ask because I knew this was a back door operation and Prodrive was not officially backing the distribution. The gentleman told me that Prodrive had released some ECU's to a select few over here for racing and performance driving schools only, but not for the general public. A short while after I was using their ECU Simon Lines posted on the " old club " that Prodrive was not recommending the use of their ECU's here in the states due to our lower octane ratings, specifically 91...
Later I decided to contact Simon to let him know that I had been using the ECU for a number of months now and it had been flawless. I figured this may be some good R&D info because I'm sure they would like to eventually release some kind of PPP version for the states. Actually I really didn't think I would here back from him because he gets hundreds of emails a day but to my surprise he responded right away and wanted to know as much as I could tell him in regards to the performance tendencies of my vehicle. Oddly he never did inquire about where I got the ECU from, don't ask don't tell kind of thing I guess, anyways he was very pleased to know how things were going and asked if I would keep in touch for updates. A few months later I gave an update ( no problems to report ) and asked what he thought about me adding a slightly larger turbo ( small IHI VF series ), sti injectors and a bigger TMIC and he responded by saying that I was going far beyond the capabilities of their ECU... He said although the Prodrive ECU is modified for more performance ie, timing and boost changes, it will not be able to cope with the quantum changes that a bigger turbo and added fuel will cause and they had not done any testing with those kinds of mods on the car. He remided me that it was their belief that the WRX EJ20 motor is not designed to safely handle anything over 300bhp and that the longevity of the motor, not to mention the transmission, will be significantly compromised if this is ignored..
I am really glad I had the chance to talk to Simon. That conversation made me get very serious about my upcomming modification pathway and helped me to make some hard decisions ( sti Ver. 7 engine swap, tranny and drive line mods, all in the works now ). Although conversly I have seen people run bigger turbos and injectors along with just the stock ECU and have been fine for many, many miles so far. And we all know now that the Subaru WRX ECU is a learning computer and can adjust, so this should be the same theoretically for the Prodrive version too as it is just the Subaru ECU reflashed by Prodrive to immediately work with their recommended specific add on mods.
Hope this feedback helps...
Tom
