TWM Performance Short Shifter Review
Introduction: Since the purchase of my 2005 WRX Wagon I have felt that the shifting was very sloppy and I became indecisive when letting my foot off the clutch not knowing what gear I was in. My biggest complaint was in downshifting. My first thought was to jump on NASIOC.com and see what the common fix for this issue is. I quickly realized that everyone on the board was using some sort of short throw shifter. I did my usual Google search at this point for a short throw shifter and found a company called TWM Performance that makes a short throw shifter for the Subaru family as well as many other auto manufacturers. I contacted Karel at TWM and ordered myself a shifter.
Quality, Installation and Fitment: Well, I must say that I have never seen such a pretty piece of equipment that I will never actually see after installing it! There was a lot of time and care put into the design of this shifter. The shifter is CNC machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum. The shifter reduces throw by 40% and the shift **** height by 2 inches. The shifter will accept the factory shift ****. TWM Performance includes a very well laid out set of instructions. I recommend reading them over before the installation just to get yourself educated with what your going to be doing. While doing the installation you are going to need a socket set and a small flat head screw driver. The installation only took me about 20 minutes. The stock lever popped right out. The new shift lever did not want to pop right in. There are many different methods to getting this done. I ended up turning a hammer on its side and with the stock shift **** on I gave it a few strong taps and it popped right in. This is a common “battle” with all Short Throw Shifters on the market. Its designed so once the shift lever is in the socket it will not come out from aggressive driving. The end result is excellent. I reinstalled the shifter boot and my factory **** turned right back on. I immediately felt the difference in the height.
Performance: This is a must do mod. What a huge difference. All my shifts are so precise now and there is no more indecisiveness in my shifting. I was very impressed with how positive it felt. I am able to get into all the gears very easily and when downshifting there is no more guessing. The shifter does give the shifting a more mechanical feel. I am very impressed with how much the throw has been reduced. I cannot see myself going back to the stock sloppiness.
Summary: The TWM Performance Short Throw Shift Kit is a must do mod for any Subaru owner. Karel at TWM was very informative and eager to help. The quality of the item is outstanding. Like I said earlier, it’s a shame that I cannot see the beautiful metallic blue shift lever on a daily basis. TWM Performance has really come thru with an excellent product. I highly recommend checking out this kit when shopping for a short throw shifter.
