Sti RA Gearset? What do you guys think?
I ordered mine from gruppe-s on 7/11 and still havent got then tranny but i didnt just order the gears i ordered the whole tranny...Hopefully ill be gettin an email soon telling me its been shipped. BUt from what ive been hearing i cant wait. plus i want to drive my car its been sitting for 2 months now.
hey i'm new to this forum my names joe, but i had a problems with my stock trans, i SHATTERED yes i said shattered, 2nd and 3rd gear, anyways typical subaru warranty BS lead me to the sti ra gears, i got the first set of sti ra MICRO polished gears in the country from rallispec. hands down this is the best mod i think you can possibly do, wrx trans are like papermashe, the acceleration is all there more than you can ever want and yes it is a bit of money, but you don't have to deal with it falling apart either.

What does micro polishing do to the gears? Mine are cryo'd, and I've heard of shotpeening them to strengthen them, but not polishing...?
P.S. Welcome to i-club!
EDIT: Nevermind I looked it up on rallispec.com myself. So the micro polishing is supposed to reduce friction, but wouldn't this, on the other hand, increase the slippery-ness between the gears, kinda like the same consequence as adding pure synthetic oil to your tranny...I mean, isn't there such thing as TOO slippery? Any input? Oh, and Gruppe-S's cryo'd RA gears are $250 cheaper than Rallispec's treated gears.

what year is your WRX because the 03s and up have gears of the same width as RAs do just different gearing and people NASIOC have broken the RA sets as easy as the stock sets do a search and you will find because i thought the RAs where difficult to break but there not
and if you do get a set make sure they are shotpeened because some venders have stopped doing the process but it adds more strength
the problem is that if you break a RA or 03+ gearbox a straight cut gearset or a 6spd are the options because dogboxes are expensive and makes the car difficult for other to drive

hey have any of you guys seen these dog boxes here on www.xcceleration.com? well what do you think, i already blew one tranny in my 04 wrx, and some how got the dealership to cover it under warranty, basically its because my family has bought 6 cars from them and they sold a brand new hemi charger to my brother that week, but anyways i figured i should just go and buy a good tranny before i get to crazy and blow this new one... Do you think a set of these gears would be worth the money, either the straight cuts or helical? is there any benefit to either, i know the straight cut are a rough engagement, but what is it going to do to the rest of my driveline like the diffy's and cv joints n such...

for those of you with the RA grear sets:
are the ratios closer?
Do any of you keep the oem 5th gear for economy and highway crusing?

If you just drive sensibly you should be fine (although I'd get it just for performance reasons). You don't have to beat on your car and deteorate you drivetrain to be able to go fast. Just watch what you doing and remember that you're paying the repair bills and I'm sure you'll be fine.
