Unhappy sloppy tranny(98 impreza L)

i have a 98 impreza L the ****ting of the gear box seems to be getting more and more sloppy. any ideas what it could be or what i could do to fix stop or slow the problem i dont want to have to get a new tranny or gear box. so please let me know any ideas or things i could do
