My friend had the same sound coming from his tranny, and the throw-out bearing is what we are expecting the problem to be. Its an $80 part (probably cheaper in the US) with about 3-4 hours worth of labor to fix. We are doing the work next week, so I can let you know in case it is something else.

FYI, we have a new clutch disc and pressure plate standing by just in case that is them problem, and, because we have the tranny off, we may as well change the clutch out anyways in the case it isn't the problem.

Forgot...

Because it is a pull-type clutch, there is a snap ring that locks the TO bearing to the pressure plate. This has a history of breaking or becoming partially dislodged from its operating position. Could be the problem also.
