Powershifting is when you shift the car without lifting off the gas [Wide open throttle].
Its great for going fast... very good for breaking trannys.
Theres not much you can do thats harder on a tranny.

Everything above it true. Also, it is almost impossible to powershift with just a short shfter lever. You need a complete short shifter linkage assy to be able to do that.

Powershifting a WRX can give you huge gains...
But like alex said its next to impossible sometimes. If you spin thru first gear 9 times out of 10 you will miss second if you try to powershift.
its not worth it in the grand scheme of things.

But for real don't power shift your all wheel drive vehicle for nothing its really not worth the abuse....I mean unless you got an extra few grand laying around.

An AWD car is not a good thing to be powershifting in unless you have a race transmission that can take the abuse. Dropping the clutch when there's 4 wheels of resistance and the weight of the driveshaft to bring up to engine speed is a nasty impulse to deal with. The bad concequences of missing a shift with a WRX are exponentially worse than they would be in any 2WD car. If you have a really light flywheel, its a different story (allows/requires higher rpms for same impulse prior to dropping clutch) but then that has performance issues that concern launches and drag racing, so its not a solution to your problem. I didn't risk powershifting in my RX-7 until I had installed a torque brace to keep the drivetrain from jerking back during shifts. I've got a shortshifter kit in there too and it helps a lot with preserving your confidence in hitting 3rd gear without worrying. Eitherway, RX-7's are 2WD and the ability they have to break the rears loose easily acts as a BOV for too much power during powershifting. The drivetrain in a WRX would be like having a racing BOV with a spring that's too tight for your boost settings. So in relation to compressor surge, the drivetrain will take the abuse for every time you do it. So don't. If you want driving pointers, then work on your clutching. There are some gains you can make with the right left footwork during upshifts at WOT. This will burn your clutch out a lot faster and shouldn't be done if you don't have the hardware to handle it. I'd say, don't try anything but normal shifting when racing. The advantage you make up with an AWD setup lies within the car's ability to be floored much sooner in the launch. Wheelspin sucks and its avoided to a large degree by driving a WRX.

Get a computer and powershift all you want. It will hold your rpm's from excedding the desired rpm.

The reason I ask this is that during the last autocross I went to (my first) I discovered that the WRX does not like to go back into 1st. I was whining about driving in 2nd at low RPM's and the lack of pick-up when I was advised that, "if all else fails you can double-clutch." Not wanting to look like an idiot I just said, "Right!" nodded my head and walked off.
So what is double-clutching?

So what is double-clutching?
double clutching: car is in 1st gear when you need to shift to 2nd clutch in to neutral. clutch out. rev to proper rpms. clutch in shift to second.
rev-matching: on syncro cars you dont need to put the clutch in to take car out of gear but...to rev match if down shifting...
run in 3rd until down shift is required. clutch in while you are shifting to 2nd give throttle to proper rpms (where the rpms would be at if going that speed in 2nd) while rpms are still up shift into 2nd clutch out.....no shudder and more power in torque curve
