Got my baby back last week (almost a month later). Transmission seems to be fine, but I'm watching it with crackhead-like paranoia now, though. The towing company owner said that the work's covered by a 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty, so that should help in case the tranny falls out. :\
There are still other repairs that need to be done, but after all this, I'm not too sure about keeping the car. I don't have a lot of faith in rebuilt transmissions. I mean, I love my baby, but I don't think she'll live as long as she would have without this whole tranny problem.

Yes, he should. Every Subaru made since 1995 and most of the ones from before then require flatbeds. EVERY tow truck operator should know this, as should their dispatchers. Especially when the customer tells them so...
