i just got my 6spd today, but the only thing i don't have is the Rear diff. i know i need a 3.90 rear diff but i just found out cause my friend up north from here installed a 6spd in his ver 1 STI V-limited is that i'll need the case and the rear diff that is marked R180.... i am pretty sure that i have a R160... so i won't beable to install this weekend.

i do have a question,,, the GC8 clutch i think will fit on the 6spd. the splines match, the flywheel is the same size. i didn't see why people are telling me that they are different. how come?

Well im not sure about your question on the GC8, but i can shed some insight with regard to the rear diff...

If you choose to use a R180 diff, you have to get STi rear axles, hubs, and brakes. You CAN use a R160 if you get rear diff that has 3.90 gear ratio AND its good to get one that has limited slip. The 91-92 Turbo Legacy's have both. You can swap the whole diff with your WRX diff.

So i dont know if you got all the hubs, axles and crap, but if you dont, then the R180 will not work with your stock setup.

And fill me in on the GC8 thing.... What is that exactly? Version 8 WRX? I am retarded or what?? hehe

You have to use a WRX style or 6 speed, clutch and flywheel. This is because the 6 speed is a pull type clutch. The RS/GC transmission pushes the throw out bearing to release the pressure of the pressure plate. JDM GC8s are WRX. The WRX pulls the throw out bearing to release the pressure. The push or pull mechanisim is dictated by the tranny. You can install the 6 speed using a WRX auto driveshaft (I have 2 in stock) and a R160 diff with 3.9:1 ratios (ring and pinion can be purchased at your local dealer). Only if you want to use the R180 do you need the axles, hubs and Brembos.

I did a 6 speed tranny swap, and it came with matching slave cylinder... and it was a push style....

R180 style diff first came out in 94 with the WRX STI ver. 2 RA. i could use the calipters off of that. i don't need the Brembos.... i want to keep my 16" rims. plus i have a GC8 ORC twin plate and it comes with brackets to convert slave clynder from the Pull to push.

Be careful trying to use that diff. The most important thing is the ratios of the tranny. If they don't match up, you will lose your rear and center diffs. All of my posts refference the US market cars and parts. Make sure you get those ratios correct!
