i suck at shifting.
alright, about a month ago i bought a '00 2.5RS 4 door with 51k miles. my first manual ever. i have to say, for driving for one month, im not doing too bad. but i was wondering if any of you have any tips for me...
so first off, i find myself starting at about 2k rpm just to get it in to first. i am very uncomfortable with letting the clutch out till it catches, and then accelerating at that time. i tried that when i first got my car, and i could never time it right. i'd stall damn near everytime, or i could get it to work but would have to nurse it and drive real slow, too slow for normal driving. i know this is bad on the clutch, but im not sure what else to do. any tips?
and ive heard this a bit, but getting from 1st to 2nd is a b*tch. i have never experienced a tougher shift in any car. i learned a manual in a Honda Civic, and didnt have to worry about jerky shifts like in my RS.
are the trannies just that tough in Subaru's? like i said, i drove that little Civic like a pro... i understand that im working with 4 wheels and not 2 or 1, but sheesh! thanks in advance

Practise letting out the clutch and adding gas at the same time, I think it is just a matter of practise until you get the feel for it.
The extra AWD drivetrain does make things a little more difficult IMO, every time you use the clutch (to change gear) you're taking the torque off the drivetrain and these's a whole lot more drivetrain in a Subie so it takes more force to accelerate and decelerate the weight of the drivetrain. Everything feels tight in my WRX and I have no problems in normal driving but when pushing it and changing over 5000rpm I have trouble making really smooth shifts, it's something I'm working on though because I want my tranny to last and jolting the tranny from gear to gear isn't good at all

i have a MY01 impreza, and after a few months i still sucked at driving it, jerky shifts all the time. i used to drive like a pro on every other standard ive ever driven. then i got my ACT clutch installed bout a week ago, pure heaven, much grabbier, but i think i can be smoother with this clutch than the stock one

i did some reading, and found that the clutch is somewhat notorious for being unfriendly and jerky. oh well. ill try some different things. ill be fine eventually. heh heh.
