which car do you have?

IIRC

rs: - 1 in the middle, none on the axles (2000-2001 rs has 1 in rear)
wrx - 1 in the middle, 1 in rear axle
STi - 1 (electronic and spiffy) in the middle, 1 in front axle, 1 in rear.

You don't HAVE to get any. You only have to get them if you need to get more traction than you have now with the same tires. Why do you have to have them?

3 is better than 2 and 2 is better than 1. If, big if, they are tuned properly. There are different types of LSD. Clutch type and viscous which offer different levels of tunability. You may not want the tightest one you can find in the front because that tends to bring understeer. For them to really improve the car you have to know a lot about them. and at $900+ each... eh you might want to try changing tires and alignment and such to see if that brings you to where you need to be first. The only reason Sti's have three is to compete with the evo while keeping a similar tire size.
