Grinding into Reverse.

I have noticed that every once in a while the reverse is hard to get into and will also grind ever so often. I just broke a 1000 miles and have read much about all the problems people are having with their trannies. Please tell me your experiences and if the problems gets worse with time.

first has a syncro, just not a very good one. Reverse does not have a syncro.
Reverse gear in all manual tranny cars will at times be stubborn and at times will grind. It is the nature of the beast and is perfectly normal/acceptable.
If your gear shift is not wanting to go into reverse do the following:
let clutch out with gear shift in neutral; push clutch in and put it in 2nd or 4th; try putting it in reverse again.
If that does not work move the car forward an inch or two in first; go to neutral and release clutch; depress clutch again and put it in reverse.

Thanks guys...

Yes I understand reverse is sometimes stubborn and know the tricks to get in in gear. I used to own a integra and it too wouldn't get into reverse, but it never grinded. I guess it just worries me to hear a brand new car with only 1000 mike grinding gears. Also with all the talk about subys trannies, just wanted to hear your thoughts. Thanks, jun

I can't name any transmission, off the top of my head, that has a synchro'ed reverse gear. Theoretically, it is pointless to have a syhchronizer on the reverse gear, and if there is a gearbox out there that has one, it is truly an exotic. Get used to the fact that reverse is hard to get into at times, as it ends up, this is a fact of life with almost EVERY available manual transmission out there.

It might give you some additional insight and understanding to know that reverse gear engagement is illustrative of how a "dog box" operates...in that it is a spur (straight cut) gear, without a syncronizer ring/hub assembly.

Dude, i totally feel u on this reverse problem thing. I've had my Wrx for roughly 5 months. I get that reverse grinding thing like once every day or so. Pisses me off, and half the time, it is hard to get into reverse. I would come to a complete stop, clutch all da way in and shift and it would grind. Pisses me off cuz i thot dat i bot a WRX wit a fuct up tranny. Whew, now i know im not alone in this and that it happens to manual cars. I even brot it bak to my dealer to complain about this problem and he told me the same thing - go to neutral, toss it into second, and then into reverse. Sadly, it dont always work, still got a grind after following his advice. Well, i juss feel relieved that I am not the only one experiencing this problem.

umm, reverse grinding is not a "problem". Cars with manual trannies do that from time to time...
Other cars I've owned that have done this:
Civic
Eclipse GS-t
Sentra
VW van
VW squareback
Mazda 626
Saab 900 turbo

In your previous cars, how often would u experience the reverse grinding thing? Cuz i get it like kind of often, and the thing about it being hard to shift into reverse happens several times a day.

Some of the cars would grind every single time I tried to engage reverse, others (the nicer ones ) would do it occasionally. Get in the habit of hitting fourth or second before putting it in reverse and you will get less grinding.

The trick is that 1st / 2nd gear slider is used for reverse, so you’re better off
Putting it in 2nd gear then go to reverse this stops all moving gears in the trans.
