FNG with trans question

I have a friend that has a 95 impreza. I'm pretty sure it's the base model. It has an automatic and sometimes she has trouble getting the car out of park. When it happens the button on the shifter won't go in. If you keep trying it goes in after a little while. When driving the car it shifts fine, I don't know if its the shifter it-self or the trans.

Is she pressing down the brake when she tries to press in the button? I am sure she most likely is, but it is best to start with the easiest thing. Look at the bottom of the shift button and make sure that nothing is obstructing its motion. There is a little metal ring that hold the button in place, make sure that isn't sticking out or something. If it isn't either of those I would geuss that she has a bad shift lock selenoid. I know on my car when I press down the brake you can hear a little clicking noise as the shift lock selenoid is functioning. Does her shifter make this noise. If you want to try and replace the selenoid, it is located underneath the shifter trim area/ gear indicator.
