EDIT: bushing replacement solved the problem (was: 5MT sucks!)

5MT Sucks!

I have a 2002 WRX with only 30k. The first tranny I had lasted up till the time 2nd and 5th started popping out. Instead of dealing with the stupid dealer who claims driving hard will cause this and they don't warranty it, I went out and got a used tranny with only 13k. After only 500 miles, the used tranny is acting wierd. Anyhow, my question to all you subby guys is; who have you have taken apart a 5mt? I'm now wanting to take this damn thing apart and figure out all of its problems and email all of you pictures of its weaknesses. I'm also going to use some of my Mechanical Engineering buddies and find where all the junk is in this crappy transmission.

How easy is it to take this apart and is there anything I should worry about when doing this?

Thanks,

Eric

BTW, my car is bone stock and I don't drive it hard at all!!!!

driving hard to you could mean a whole different meaning to others.. i mean i could call it bad luck, but two trannys is a little odd.. it could be the way you drive though.. just a thought...

You'd be better off changing your driving style (or did you put something other than the OEM recommended 80-90 dino in your transmission????) rather than trying to nit-pick the tranny design. Why don't you put a proven sti tranny in there?

Just an FYI: The VAST majority of 5mt tranny owners do not have any issues.

Dear Subbies-

I found out what the problem is..... I got my panties in a bunch for nothing. The bushing has worn a bit and makes for loose shifting. I ordered the KB bushings and once I get them in it should be a different story. I was sooo pissed I couldn't see straight.... now I see.

Bushings

I-club-

I have installed my Kartboy bushings and my shifting is perfect once again. I would like to inform people that using a good grease, synthetic or regular on the moving parts is a good idea. I found the old bushing a bit dry and loose. I think greasing makes a huge difference in shifting and greasing all moving parts external to the tranny will improve shifting drastically.

Thanks for posting up your install tips! I'll use them when I install mine down the road.
