I tackled my first clutch swap on the WRX last weekend. It was a successful operation. I did it with the help of 2 other buddies in a garage with the car on jackstands. With lunch and dinner breaks and some idle chit chat, the whole procedure took about 13 hours. I would not recommend doing this unless you are really hard up to save the labor dollars.

Couple of notes:

• Check into pulling motor in lieu of dropping tranny for the next time. Looks like considerably less work involved pulling the long block out instead of dropping the tranny.. with the car on jackstands at least.
• I got the cluctch from http://www.clutchcityonline.com. It came complete with a pressure plate, disc, and throwout bearing for $199 + $15 shipping to my door.
  I looked around for the Subaru parts and you can't touch that collection for less than $400 from the dealer. The ClutchCity unit is an Exedy clutch rated for stock duty. It won't last long.. but damn, it's cheap!

Right now I have about 80 miles on the car since the swap. I won't be turning up the boost or getting crazy until about 500. I'll report back then.

I probably won't be filling up the nitrous bottle again until the Spring. I hope my El-Cheapo clutch makes it.

Did you replace the stock clutch because it wore out, if so, how many miles? Or just swapped it out for somehing better.

I plan on replacing my clutch with a better unit once the stock one wears out. I have 16k now, just wondering how much longer I may have to wait

If you have access to a lift you'd see how painless it is to just drop the transmission. I've done plenty of Subaru clutches and it still amazing me to hear people pulling a motor to do a clutch.

 

I replaced with a stock clutch. 400+hp at the crank finally took its toll on the stocker. It was slipping from about 4-5k in every gear.

So long as I stay off the bottle, tis one shoyld last a decent amount of time. Another 20K maybe

I got 28k out of the original clutch.

 

I'm sure. One of the guys that helped me had done several on the lift already.

It's interesting to note that I was a bit skeptical about the pull motor method when I had several people mention that to me before I tackled this job.

 

I used my stock clutch for 45K with about 350-400 horsepower, no problems. Guess Im just nice to it.

Guess my 227HP just isn't going to wear my clutch down anytime soon. Just need to get some mods
