Clutch master cylinder question

Clutch master cylinder question
How can you tell if the clutch master cylinder is going bad. The other day when I satarted my car I pushed the clutch in with the car still in 1st and it jumped forward on me as if the pedal was not all the way down and it was all the way to the floor.. Any feed back would be great!! Thanks
