cheap short throw or something serrious?

I bought a short throw shifter off ebay $10 after installing it the gears would grind slightly going into 6th over 3000 rpm, if I let off the gass for a bit before shifting it would go in smooth. I thought this was because of degrading trans lube so i switched it out... same thing... I thought.. ok just remember to let off before i shift. about 6 months ago i noticed that it would do the same grind sound going into 4th... It seems to me im just getting carless with the clutch and not fully depressing it with the 4th issue...
Im worried that this is not just a crappy shifter and a careless driver but warning signs of a serrious problem
forgot to metion its a 2000 2.5rs with an M5 tranny

you aren't supposed to be on the gas when you're shifting in the first place. sounds like it could be syncros, but that wouldn't really make sense with an rs . . .

im sorry i miss worded it. I depress the clutch and dont shift untill the rpms drop under 3k then i let off the clutch and get on the gass again. going into 5th that is
BTW.. what did you mean by that wouldent make sence with an rs? are rs syncros tougher or something? or is it that it dosent have enough hp to hurt itself?

By any chance, did you learn to drive a stick in this car? You are supposed to depress the clutch pedal all the way to the floor when changing up or down a gear (or going into neutral). The clutch should be fully disengaged.

Don't use bargain basement parts in your Subaru. The quality will always be questionable. Some members might have had good luck with eBay short shifters but you'll never know what you are getting.

no, actully, I learned how to drive a stick working at a local toyota dealership as a porter then when i became a parts truck driver i drove a manual every day.. Yes i know your supposed to fully depress the clutch but some times you get tired and the quordination is off... thats what i think is causing the grind into 4th.
I here you on the chepo ebay buys... there is just something very appealing about a $10 part as apposed to a $250 part...

totally bringing a thread back from the dead, but i figured id do it since i have a bit to contribute.

the problem is probably the cheapo short throw. Factory shifter has a rubber isolator between the lever and the linkage. Pull on your shift **** and you'll see it. That thing gives a little slop in the shifter so the synchros can lag a bit for smoother engagement, and if there is a notch, it can be damped. I'm guessing your cheap short throw did away with that, and so it feels more precise and more notchy. I don't know if removing the isolator is bad for your trans, but my guess is that its slightly harder on the synchros.
