Center Differential bad?

What is a good indication that your center diff is bad? I have a 04 wrx, I havent had any popping or any relative noise when turning. I've heard that you could put the trans in gear and spin the front wheels on a lift and the rear should turn as well? This is a viscous center correct? So itll probably need some kind of load or torque in order to transfer to the rear diff for the wheels to turn? Thanks..James

Trust me, you'll know when the center diff fails.

When mine failed, it was a high whining sound from right under the shifter, with a subtle click-click-click (more like wub wub wub in 4th and 5th) that got faster with the RPMs. I don't know what this wheel spin thing is that you're referring to; even 300+ WHP WRX/STis have trouble spinning all four wheels without really dropping the clutch, unless you have extremely bald tires. If you mean squealing the fronts a bit when you take off from a stop light, the fronts will squeal before the backs because the weight transfers off the front wheels slightly as the car begins to move forward, so that's normal.

I wasn't saying i was going out and whipping ****ties to figure out the problem....I'm pretty sure this was some bad info anyhow. But yea i'm sure everything is fine, I'm thinking the source of noise is coming from my tires as I've been reading everyone that has these Kuhmo Ecsta XS complain on how noisy they are.

04 Wrx bucking

I have a 2004 WRX that is currently not running so well. I was leaving Taco Bell one night and as i turned right out of the parking lot, my car basically made a loud clunking noise and then my car started bucking every couple feet that i went. I made it back home since it was only right down the road, and when i brought it to the Subaru dealer they said they think i need a new transmission. It's a 5 speed, and it goes into gear fine which doesnt necessarily mean its fine, but if i try to move it, it still makes the noise and bucks as if somethings not locking in where its supposed to. Please help lol
