Some cars, including my '02 WRX, make such a sound when brakes are applied for the first time after starting down the road. I believe it is the ABS getting set. I also hear this in a Saturn, and in my '06 Outback 2.5. Maybe there are other answers. (I notice it only when at low speed and first brake pedal application.)
