2005 Legacy 2.5i auto transmission issue on full steering wheel turn
On my 2005 Legacy 2.5i wagon automatic, I am concerned that starting off from stationary with the steering wheel at fully locked position is not as smooth as I expect- it feels like a slight hesitation or roughness in the transmission or power delivery to the wheels. Is it possible the wheels are binding during the turn? Anyone else experienced this?

Just dont start with the wheel fully locked in one position. It makes your power steering pump work too hard. I just drove an 05 GT sedan auto last w-end on an auto x type course and didnt notice anything with the steering being a problem.

i was told that it's the rear diff binding in tight, low-speed turns. in our case, it was a 95 legacy and the dealer replaced the rear diff fluid in hopes it would solve the problem, and it did. not sure if this solution applies in your case since yours is brand new and ours is not...

full steering turn from standstill
i have a LGT and experience this when pulling in/out of parking spaces; it is when i release from the brake and let the idle move the car you can feel the resistance...only at full turn. Wondering if it is resistance of tires against idle...don't know...

We just bought an auto 05 Legacy 2.5i sedan about two weeks ago, and from the start, it's been doing what you're describing. It's most noticeable going in and out of the garage, since the garage is at a 90 degree angle with the driveway. Our legacy tends to stutter @ full lock and when we allow the idle to move the car forward. I doubt this issue will go away, that is, unless we trade it in one day for a 50 grand Lexus. /
There are some other problems that we've noticed with our brand new legacy, now with ~ 300 miles. While idling, we can feel the engine 'shuddering' inside the cabin. Is this probably an engine belt timing problem? The revs are just about @ 500, so it seems to be normal.
In terms of the auto transmission: have any of you ever had the problem of your tranny making a loud buzzing sound when switching from N to D at a stop? Ours does that consistently, and I'm thinking it's an issue worth checking out.
Thanks guys,
jonathan

the buzzing sound i hear from N to D also, but in my dad's 03 forester XS. it's espcially noticable when i'm in the car with the window down. i just assumed it's normal.

I was told by a subie tech on legacygt.com not to turn the wheel to lock
if I don't have to, and I've been careful ever since...
we have a 2.5i auto as well as my GT and it's definitely a combination of a few things. As pointed out, there is a lot of strain on the PS pump when at full wheel lock which in turn strains the motor a little. The minor flex problem with the diff was also brought to attention and when combined with the relatively sluggish auto trans...pretty much answers itself i think. Flushing the diffs in AWD and 4WD cars every 10k or so will save you a lot of problems down the road
