The shavings that you are describing is normal subaru tranny wear. But at any rate I would start saving for the R/A gearset and a clutch. No sense in waiting for the brick to fall. In overview the tranny is the weakest part, so throw in a *****in' gearset and have a kick *** clutch and your car will be bulletproof.

The first change on the transmission will show a lot of stuff on the magnetic drain plug, it is normal. Next time you change it, you should see far less of the same. At least that was the case with me, but I do mine every 15K...because I'm paranoid.
