04 wrx tranny help

hi guys,

I'm still learning how to drive the car smoothly, also having tips from my friend who own a Sti.But since he has a Sti,i assume the situation might be different.

So far,i still have problem when shift from 1st to 2nd, i'll hear a clunk sound. Is that my clutch or drivechain? My friend told me because i pressed the clutch all the way down and made the noise when i let the clutch go. I've been doing that for the past 2 years on my previous car(93' honda del sol). If i just press the clutch till it disengage and shift then let it go slowly than it'll be fine.

I have no problem with that, but driving home after work;i'm too tired to remember doing all that. also,if that's the case,I can never let the clutch go fast under hard acceleration?
need you guys advise, driving tips etc.

Thanks a lot!

Since there is a big change in gear ratios from 1-2, you have to give the engine more time to slow down to the right speed. I had a big problem for a while on my RS but after a while it came naturally.

When you are accelerating normally, after you get moving in first gear and are ready to shift to second, make sure you step on the clutch pretty quickly. After you step on the clutch put the car in neutral ready to shift to second. Wait a tiny bit until you see the tach start to drop. As the tach is dropping, shift from neutral to second in a smooth motion. If you do the shift correctly, you will not use the syncros as much and it will go in smoother. then release the clutch smoothly and accelerate. If you do this correctly, you will have a flawless shift.

When you are accelerating fast, you will use the synchros a lot more to get it in to second faster. This will allow you to use the flywheel's momentum to get you moving faster in second gear. This is what causes wear of the syncros in the gearbox.

Just make sure you give the car a second to catch up. The smooth shifting will prevent shock to the driveline, which is what usually causes gearboxes to fail.

It takes you a bit to get good at a maunual with your car. It took me about 6 months to get really good on a stick. Just keep it up!

Cyrus is right, no matter what, do not get discouraged. After a while, it's almost rewarding knowing that you have to be so balanced driving the car around. You'll get the hang of it. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips Jay & Cyrus. I pretty much can shift from 1st to 2nd smoothly now. I'm working on 2nd to 3rd at this time. I'm having a hard time shift smoothly without a bit jerkness and a clunking noise...I'm guessing I didn't let out the clutch smooth enough or the same tips Jay told me?correct me if i'm wrong.I'm working hard to drive the car smoothly.

Tthanks again~^^

2nd to 3rd should be pretty easy, although you need to shift a bit quickly. The 2nd to 3rd gear ratios are a touch closer, so you don't need to wait as long as a 1st to 2nd shift.

Try not to get mad at yourself or the car if you tend to screw up from time to time. Just keep driving around and you'll learn the ins and outs of it
