'04 Wrx 5mt

Guys, I test drove one on Saturday, and I'm in love. After much thought and anxiety I've decided that the WRX is a more viable option than the STI for me with the ride quality and overall creature comfort. The only thing stopping me is that 5MT and all this 1st, 2nd gear breakage talk. I know I will want to launch the car, heck it's a performance car. If I went with the WRX, I'd probably mildly tune the car, Cobb reflash, up-pipe, cat back, etc. Nothing invasive except for perhaps 4.44 gears. What is breaking these things, straight up side stepping the clutch, or just aggressive high RPM slip launches? Gear sets look awfully expensive, and the dealers don't seem to warranty these tranny fixes. Would the abuse of AutoCross do in this tranny? Would it be cheaper in the long run to go ahead and get the STI?

They aren't as bad as those with bad experiences would have you believe. It's mostly hard launches, but bad shift technique is hard on them too. For the $8-9,000 difference in price, you could easily add the STi 6MT to your WRX and have money to spare compared to buying the STi. Then you would have little to worry about. In the meantime, don't drop the clutch, shift smoothly (rev match when you are really trying to go fast) and just generally drive it easier than you would a FWD that will spin a tire to spare the gears.
