Possibilities of tranny swaps for MY02 WRX?

Hey Guys,
Im just wondering which trannies are compatable with the MY02 WRX. I know there are some difficulties with the Push or Pull style TOB's, so justgimme something to work from.

An STI 6 speed tranny would work fine. But you have to either get a 3.9 rear diff and an automatic driveshaft or a whole STI rear end. But the cheapest would probably be to get an STI 5 speed gearset and have that installed into your current 5 speed.

Im not very interested in swapping to a 6-speed , well at least until the come down in price a bit. But I've been reading a bit about version 4 and version 5 trannies from Canadian and *** cars, so Im wondering if they involve any switching of parts...

All of us hear at the shop have either a version 4 or 5 in our cars. I run the version 4 with 4:11 gear ratio. One of our owners runs the version 5 with 4:44 and the other has the same one as mine. We love them. If you would like some more specific info on them then by all means give me a call.

RA gears are expensive! or not really..

what 1500 or so for the gears.. then you have to pay someone to pull the tranny and install them.. no idea the price on this.. 1000 bucks?

2500.. a sti 6speed without dccd shouldnt THAT much right?

From what I've gathered over the past year or so if that all in all, 6-speed swaps cost about $6-7K by the time you're done.

Pulling the tranny is something I have to learn to do, so the subi is getting that done in the garage. Pulling the actual gears off and pressing the new ones on is probably the only thing I'd actually have to pay for besides the gears themselves.

So thats about $1600 option for RA gears... or I can just get a used v.4 orv.5 tranny for about the same and bolt it up and keep my stocker for something else.

Not exactly sure. but they are STi trannies, so inherently they are going to be better than the stockers here. Im mainly worried about gear rations more than strength right now....

I am gambling on another option in replacing my broken box that is about
$1,000 depending on if you pull and replace the tranny yourself. My prior 1st gear went away so both a new first , second and the other gears not dented and new syncros were cryofroze (about $200) and put into a new Forester case (about $200) . The Forester case has a lot more support ribbing on the case so hopefully the unit will last. I have talked to some that say Cryo won't help and some that swear by it. I guess time will tell but for $1,000 for a basic new box with the same ratios that I like for Rallycross, it is worth a try.
