EJ22 or EJ25?
EJ22 or EJ25?
what should i put in my 95 impreza i hear EJ22 is a lot easier to install but EJ25 will add more hp are there any other diffrences and what would you recomend for a newbie subaru driver
Im going to assume you are talking about the turbo motors. Besides the obvious displacement difference there are some things that seperate the two motors. If you buy a usdm EJ25 (STI motor) you will get forged pistons and all those goodies. Im not sure if there are any company's that will sell an EJ22 with forged internals. Since there were some 2.2impreza's i would think that the EJ22 should fit quite a bit easier than the 2.5L motor. It basically comes down to two factors. How much money are you willing to spend and how much power are you looking to make? The EJ22 should be good for 300hp, more if you strengthen the internals, while you can make a 2.5L handle up to 400+depending on the block. If you just want a quick daily driver that you dont have to dump a huge amount of cash into than go with the EJ22, wanna build a street monster or race car?...EJ25, or EJ257 (save yourself some cash).
The USDM STi 2.5 L motor does NOT have forged pistons.

In any case, finding USDM STi motors should be no problem considering how many there are on the road. I'm not sure what USDM model runs 2.2 L, but all the current ones are 2.5. As for power, there's no replacement for displacement. Turbocharged 4 vs. turbocharged 4 all things created equal (forged internals, same turbos, same setup etc), the 2.5 WILL make more HP and more importantly, more torque. Just my long 2 cents.

I think that the first question you have to ask is how much money you have to spend on your swap. Next would be the timeframe in which you wish to complete it. I imagine I am going to get a lot of arguments on this, but I fail to see the point of putting in a turbo 2.2. A NA 2.5 produces as much power as the turbo 2.2, so if you are planning on dropping in an engine and leaving it alone, then why not do the NA 2.5? All that aside, it is conceivable that you will end up spending $7000 or more if you plan on having the swap done for you. Why not just buy a 2002 or 2003 (first gen USDM) WRX? You will have a MUCH better vehicle in terms of chasis regidity, drive train, and suspension for only a little bit more money. Maybe I'm wrong on this one, but 227 hp in a superior vehicle for only a couple grand more sounds like a good deal to me... Anyway, if you check around you will find that a 2002 WRX wagon in great shape can be found for under $12grand.

If you have the money go 22t, get forged pistons, and push more boost than a sti block.
